what are the best children’s haircuts

Strategies To Help Your Kids Survive The Hair Cutting Experience

As children’s hair stylists, one of our main priorities is to support parents so they can help their
kids participate more at the children’s hair salon. A common issue often discussed with parents
is the difficulties with hair brushing and haircuts.

For so many of us adults, brushing our hair or having a haircut is a relaxing experience. But for
many little ones, it can be a source of anxiety and fear.

The reason for this anxiety and fear centres around a sensory sensitivity to touch. The feeling of
the hair cape, the hairdresser’s fingers, comb/brush, scissors, and lightly buzzing clippers can be
an overwhelming sensory experience. What makes it more difficult is that most of these things
occur behind the child’s head where they can’t be seen and can come upon them rather
unexpectedly. This type of sensory overload can cause sensitive kids to go into “fight or flight”

mode, causing an increase in heart rate, sweaty palms, and a tendency to go into defensive
behaviours, which may involve screaming, hitting, kicking, or running away.

Noise can also play a role in making haircuts a scary experience for sensory-sensitive kids. Our
auditory system alerts us to potential dangers before we can even see them or touch them, and
it is a prime candidate for making haircuts extremely challenging for kids who are already
sensitive to noise, especially in a new environment.

Here are some strategies and tips that can help make the haircutting process less stressful for
everyone:

What Parents Can Do To Reduce Stress Before The Children’s Haircut

Try to schedule the haircut appointment at a time of day when your child is most
happy and calm, and/or when the hair salon is the least busy.

Role play haircuts with your child. Much like pretending to give a medical check-up
with a toy stethoscope, you can give pretend haircuts to each other or even with stuffed
animals. You can use your hands or even salad tongs as pretend scissors.

Be intentional about the words you use. The word “cut” may cause unnecessary fear
leading up to the big day. Alternatively, it may confuse — we generally warn kids about
how scissors are dangerous, so they may easily make that connection with danger when
going for haircuts. Consider using other phrases such as going to “get a trim” or “get
handsome/pretty hair”.

Use social stories to help your child become more familiar with what will occur during
a haircut.

Read books about getting haircuts.

Have your child watch videos of kids getting their hair cut (such as a friend, sibling, or
even videos on YouTube). This can help take away some of the mystery and fear, and
they can re-watch as many times as they need. Look into specially designed hair clipping
products, such as The Calming Clipper.

Bring your child with you to observe you or a family member getting their hair cut.
Quinn Harper Children’s Hair Salon also offers haircuts for mummies and daddies.

Visit the children’s hair salon a couple of times so your child can feel more at ease. You
are welcome to our Quinn Harper children’s hair salon for a visit and check it out for
yourself so your child will come to feel familiar with the location.

See if your child can meet the hairdresser before the haircut if possible. It’s so helpful
for the hairdresser to have a basic understanding of your child’s sensory sensitivities!

If your child has a specific diet their OT has recommended to help with calming, be
sure to complete that prior to the haircut. We want to do everything we can to help
place him or her in an optimal state of mind before this experience.

Use visuals or a visual schedule if needed so your child can see what will be occurring
before, during, and after the haircut.

For boys’ haircuts, consider whether a buzz cut will be easier than one that involves
sharp and snippy scissors.

For girls’ haircuts, simpler is better. Consider whether there is a certain basic hairstyle
or haircut that will be less stressful for your child.

During The Haircut

Bring your own haircutting cape if needed. You can use a familiar towel from home and
then secure it with a safety pin, clothespin, or chip clip.

Have your child wear a button-up or zip-up top if possible (with a T-shirt underneath),
so it can be removed as soon as the haircut is over. Those tiny hair remnants can be
very uncomfortable on children’s skin.

Allow your child to sit in your lap if needed. It’s up to the hairdresser, but if the child is
sitting in your lap and is facing you, it will give the hairdresser better access to the back
of their head.

Help your child engage in their “calming sequence” if they have one before the
clippers touch their head. This may involve deep breathing, hand squeezes, playing with
a fidget item, or repeating a calming phrase.

If the noise of the scissors or clippers bothers your child, find a way to block out the
noise. If your child is comfortable with it, you can try using wax earplugs or earbuds
with calming music.

Have your child bring one or a few preferred items into the haircutting chair, such as a
handheld toy, book, or video.

Bring a snack that will help keep your child still, such as a fruit pouch, a cup with a no-
spill straw, Goldfish crackers, etc. You could even try to provide enough snacks to last the whole haircut. Coordinate with the hairdresser, so they know that when the snack
or drink is gone, the haircut is over.

If you know or can plan how long the haircut will take, use a visual timer to help your
child understand how long the haircut will last. Quinn Harper children’s hair salon also
uses nursery rhymes, a music playlist, or a video of a certain duration for this. Once the
video or playlist is done, the haircut is done.

After The Haircut

Build consistency into the haircutting routine by visiting the same children’s salon
each time (and getting the same stylist, if possible). This will help build a greater level
of predictability and familiarity.

Provide a tangible reward or fun/preferred activity directly after the haircut. This
could be something edible, or maybe a short trip to a special place (e.g., frozen yoghurt,
favourite park or playground).

Brushing Tips

You can use some of the same strategies listed below for hair brushing.
• If your child is sensitive to touch, use a soft bristle brush.
• Brush in front of the mirror so that your child can predict when the brush is coming.
• Have your child brush his/her own hair.
• Massage the scalp before hair brushing.
• Use a conditioner to detangle as much as possible.
• Use a Tangle Teezer brush.
• With tangles that start at the bottom of the hair, hold just above the tangle and then
work up to the root.
• Ask for a short hairstyle for your child.

Baby And Toddler Haircut/Baby’s First Haircut

Whether your baby was born with lots of hair or barely a hair on their head, eventually, the
time comes when you need to think about their first hair trim. Your baby’s first haircut is one of
the most exciting and sometimes stressful occasions in your child’s life. For little ones who have

never experienced a children’s hair salon, it can be quite eye-opening at the kid’s hairdresser.
Having a pleasant experience at this time is crucial for parents and their children alike.

Rather than just take them to any hairdresser, therefore, it’s always best to find a salon that
specialises in children’s haircuts. At Quinn Harper children’s hair salon, we specialise in baby’s
first haircuts and do our best to make sure your little one has the best experience possible.

Our baby and toddler hairdresser team are here to greet each client in a warm and welcoming
atmosphere where you and your baby can enjoy an amazing marine fish tank, interactive car,
and a TV playing their favourite nursery rhymes. After your baby’s first hair trim, our expert
team will provide you with a lovely certificate and a little bag to contain that first precious lock
of your little one’s tresses.

Helpful Tips For Your Child’s Haircut

Here’s a stress-free guide for your child’s first haircut or if your child had a stressful experience
in the past.

Constantly brushing hair out of your kid’s eyes? Time for a trim. But while you may have visions
of an adorable, Instagram-ready moment for your child, the experience can be traumatic for
them. Here are some genius tips to get you through your baby’s first haircut or, if they’ve had a
stressful experience in the past, without the tears:

1. Organise an appointment time that works best for your child.

2. Touch your child’s head often. A friendly ruffle of their hair, giving it a brush, or a gentle
massage all familiarise your child with their head being touched. This will reduce the
stress for your little one and prevent them from reaching up with their hands during the
haircut.

3. Talk about what is going to happen a couple of days prior in a fun and exciting way, as if
they are going to a kid’s zoo. Explain that the person doing their hair trim will have very
special little scissors and a comb, that the person will touch their head and maybe spray
their hair with some water.

4. Ensure you take your little one to a children’s hairdresser. Completing a successful
haircut on a wriggling, squiggling child is a challenge and not a task for someone
inexperienced.

5. Bring a spare top for your child to put on after the haircut. Lots of children are hesitant
to wear a cape for the haircut and tend to end up with hair all over them!

6. Let your kid bring his or her favourite toy to keep them occupied and comforted. You
may have a “no-tech” rule at home, but times like these are when a cartoon on a big TV
screen can be extremely helpful. If your child is a wiggle worm and doesn’t want to sit in
the chair or car alone, then having them sit in your lap will make everything go much
smoother.

7. Preparing a snack may help keep them occupied while they have their haircut. It is
comforting for them, even if they just hold it in their hands.

8. Don’t feel embarrassed by your child’s behaviour at a kid’s hair salon. A haircut is a very
confronting experience for many children, and most will grow out of it if treated with
compassion by the stylist.

9. Praise, encourage and distract your child during the haircut.

10. If you have a specific style you would like your child’s haircut to mimic, bring a picture or
prepare a clear description of what you want beforehand.

We hope these 10 tips help you – especially if your child is sensitive to having their hair cut!

how much do children’s haircuts cost

What Should You Consider When Booking A Children’s Haircut?

Whether your child is blessed with curly hair, thick luscious locks, or going through that
between-length stage, our expert team specialises in kid’s haircuts to give your little one the
most suitable hairstyle. We have a lot of experience with children, and we want your little ones
to feel comfortable enough to sit during the cutting process. However, you must also respect
the fact that your kid may not always want a haircut.

Opting for a specialist children’s hairdresser that can help remove these concerns, though, is
important because we are aware of the challenges involved in the process. We know how to
ensure your child remains happy during their haircut experience. We can also engage them in
conversation, keep them calm, and make them feel comfortable throughout the whole process.

At Quinn Harper Children’s Hair Salon, we will always ask how you want the finished cut to look
before starting anything, so make sure you have some photos ready. If you can’t find any, a
thorough description of the desired hairstyle will do. No matter which style you opt for, our pro
stylist will always offer professional advice if he or she has concerns about your ideas. They will
ensure that you and your child are both happy with the finished look.

Get Your Child Excited About Their Haircut

We offer toys, lollies, biscuits, books, and cartoons on a big TV screen as distractions to keep
your little one occupied. If your child has their attention distracted elsewhere by something, the
whole process can go a lot smoother.

It can be helpful to reassure your little one that although their haircut will take a little while,
they will look and feel much better after it’s done. You can also get your child excited about an
activity that will happen after their haircut, such as going outside to play or having some
sweets. Giving them something to look forward to will ensure they can look beyond the haircut
and hopefully tolerate it while it’s in progress.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Want to have your baby’s head shaved at Quinn Harper Children’s Hair Salon? Here are some tips for a safe Mundan Ceremony.

  • The baby must be well fed and rested beforehand. Babies usually become restlesswhen hungry or sleepy.
  • Choose a professional children’s hairdresser who has good experience with kids.
  • The equipment used must be clean and sterilised so that the kid doesn’t catch an infection. At Quinn Harper Children’s Hair Salon, we use a sterilised mini trimmer forsafety reasons. We don’t use traditional shaving tools as they are not safe for shaving moving babies.
  • After shaving your precious one’s head, we will clean them with wet wipes, then use baby oil. We also recommend giving your baby a nice, warm bath after the ceremony.

What is involved in a children’s hairdressing appointment?

The Quinn Harper team is here to greet each client in a warm and welcoming atmosphere
where you and your child can enjoy an amazing marine fish tank.

Your little one can choose where to sit upon arrival, from an interactive car, a Hollywood vanity
mirror, in front of our fish tanks, or on your lap in a comfy chair.

Your children will be able to watch their favourite programme on Netflix or listen to their
favourite nursery rhymes during their haircut.

We have a 30-minute appointment time, and we like to start with making friendly conversation
with your child, so he or she feels comfortable with our experienced hairstylist. We kindly ask
you to arrive on time for your appointment so we can give the best possible service. We use a
water spray gently on the comb rather than straight to the hair and a chemical-free detangling
spray before we cut your child’s hair. We finish every girl’s haircut and boy’s haircut with a
blow-dry and hairstyling. If you allow us, we will then offer Chupa Chups lolly, cool stickers,
temporary tattoos, biscuits, and balloons for every little customer.

Are you offering first haircuts with a certificate?

We offer the same service mentioned at children’s hairdressing appointment. After your baby’s
first hair trim, our expert team will provide you with a lovely certificate and a little bag to
contain that first precious lock of your little one’s tresses. When you book, please make sure
you book for a ‘children’s first haircut’ so we can prepare the certificate for you in advance.

What age are your hairdressing appointments suitable for?

We recommend our hairdressing appointments from newborn babies up to teens. Also, we
have Mummy&Me and Daddy&Me haircuts. We don’t have an age limit.

Do you wash and blow-dry the hair?

We don’t wash the child’s hair, but we do wet it with a warm water spray. Please arrive with
freshly washed hair for your child hair appointment. All haircuts are finished with a blow dry.

What products do you use?

We carry a variety of the highest quality child-specific hair care products and brands, including
the organic Original Sprout and chemical-free Jackson&Willow.

Our stylists are product experts! Talk to them about finding the right products to ensure that
your child’s hair is healthy and manageable.

What qualifications do your hairdressers have?

Our team members possess the highest level of skill in hairdressing and have many years of
experience working with children.

What should I do for my kid’s first haircut?

Depending on your child’s age, you can do various things to help them prepare for their first
haircut at a boys’ and girls’ hair salon. Why not try rehearsing the haircut in a playtime session
at home? Include a cape, a water spritzer, safety scissors (or fake ones), and a chair, so they
know what to expect.

How do I prepare my child for a haircut?

Getting the right kids’ hairstyle, especially for the first time, can prove to be a challenging task.

You can prepare and make sure everything goes smoothly by:

● Bringing a supply of fresh clothes.
● Distract them with toys or a book during the haircut.
● Offering them appropriate treats afterwards.

What age should your child get his or her first haircut?

There’s no ideal age for a first trip to the baby hairdresser. On average, parents tend to take
their children when they’re between six months and two years old. Some newborns are born
with a lot of hair and maybe ready sooner than others, while others prefer to wait for the first
haircut until their child is a toddler. Quinn Harper Children’s Hair Salon has no age limits, so you
can bring your baby for the first haircut as soon as you feel you want it. The youngest child who
had a haircut with us was two weeks old.

What are hairdressers for kids?

The job of a children’s hairdresser is to style the hair in a specific way. They can trim, cut, and
texture your child’s hair as appropriate. Make sure that the hairdresser is fully trained and
qualified; and when it comes to cutting children’s hair, experience with kids is an important
aspect to consider in addition. At Quinn Harper Children’s Hairdresser, we only have

professional hairstylists who are highly experienced with kids. They will ensure your child’s
safety during haircuts.

How much should a child’s haircut cost?

Kids’ haircuts are often less expensive than adult haircuts, although there may be some
variations depending on where you live, the style of the cut, and whether or not the hairdresser
has experience with youngsters. Cutting children’s hair is requires professionalism and
experience with children, as well as lots of patience and love toward kids. The standard
children’s haircut we offer at Quinn Harper is £25 for a 30-minute appointment with a highly
trained hairdresser, including the cut itself, stickers, lollies, balloons. However, we do offer
various other packages, such as two children’s haircuts at £45 and a Mummy&Me or
Daddy&Me haircut at £55.

What are the best haircuts for kids?

As with any older children’s cut, styling is an important consideration. Here are some cool and
unique children’s hairdos that are in style for kids:
Trendy little boy hairstyles:

● High fade.
● Long pompadour fade.
● Low fade with spiky hair.
● Mid skin fades with a side part.
● Tapered sides with side-swept fringe.
● Thick, textured fringe with short sides.

Cute little girl hairstyles:

  • Girl’s bob haircuts.
  • Girls layered haircuts.
  • Girls braid hairstyle.

When will my baby need their first haircut?

It depends on how quickly their hair grows, and of course, your personal preference. Babies
born with a lot of hair that grows quickly and starts getting in their eyes may need their first cut
in their first year. Others who don’t have hair so quickly may not need their first cut until the
age of about two years. It’s worth bearing in mind that trimming super-fine, wispy baby hair can
make it appear thicker.

It’s all in preparation. A stranger coming at you with a pair of scissors can be a scary prospect
for unsuspecting little ones. It helps if you can give your little one a chance to see you or a
family member get their hair cut, and for this reason, we offer a Mummy&Me Haircut and
Daddy &Me Haircut. Avoid using the word cut; use ‘trim’ or ‘snip’ instead. Also, give your little
one a pretend haircut when they’re in the bath. You may even find a storybook about going for
a haircut.

How do I help my baby stay still for a children’s cut?

Some may be happy sitting still in our interactive car and watching nursery rhymes. For those
not so sure about being sat in a chair with a pair of sharp scissors heading their way, we try
some distraction techniques.

We are here to help your little one feel comfortable during their haircut. We offer a big-screen
TV where they can listen to nursery rhymes or watch their favourite cartoon while they sit in
our interactive car to make them feel at home. Listed below are some other things we can do:

An iPad: A common first distraction tool for many little ones today. To take their mind
off of what’s happening, we put on their favourite programme on the iPad to give them
something else to focus on.

Favourite toy: Giving a child his or her favourite toy to play with is another good
distraction to help them focus on something else while their hair is cut.

A snack: Giving them a snack can help keep them occupied while they have their
haircut. We offer biscuits and lollies during and after the haircut.

We feel it’s important that your little ones feel happy during the haircut, so we offer them
lollies, biscuits, stickers, and balloons. These can be instant mood lifters. If your kid has food
allergies or if you simply don’t want to give them sugar, then you can bring their favourite
snacks and treats.

In our kid’s salon, we have plenty of toys and other distractions on the walls. We try to keep the
little anxious ones facing away from the mirror so that they don’t get scared seeing their hair
being trimmed.

Make sure your little one isn’t tired or hungry when you plan a haircut, as this will only add to
their foul mood.

My baby gets upset when trying to get their haircut, what can I do?

Dad may be able to get a trim in less than 20 minutes, but your baby boy will probably need
more time than that. Set aside an afternoon for your kid’s first haircut and be prepared to take
a couple of breathers.

We take breaks if needed. A baby haircut will take more time, so we offer 30-minute sessions.
You can hold their hand during the haircut, cuddle them, or just sing their favourite songs.

Tips To Have The Best Possible Experience During A Children’s Haircut

A kids’ hair salon will have plenty of toys, experience, and patience in cutting your little one’s
hair. But some children will still get freaked out watching a stranger snip around their head
(even if they’re sitting in a super-cool mini car). Kids often feel intimidated by mirrors and don’t
like watching themselves as they’re being styled. Therefore, we let them choose their favourite
cartoon on TV instead of having them sit in front of the mirror so they don’t feel overwhelmed
by what’s going on.

Be clear about which children’s hairstyle you want for your little one. If you have a specific way
you want your child’s hair to be cut, then please stay close to the stylist and give all the
information she or he needs to create the desired hairstyle. Even if your child had a haircut with
us before, it is useful to tell us again instead of just saying “like last time”.

Let our girls’ and boys’ hairdresser know exactly what ideas you have before the haircut. If your
child is old enough, ask them to look at some pictures of different age-appropriate styles. Let
them carefully pick out a style they like and take it to our hairdresser as an example.

Our boys’ and girls’ hairdressers can always advise you on what we think would be the best
hairstyle for your child, but never be afraid to consult with us if you think something does not
work for your child’s face shape; children’s haircuts should accentuate their best features and
hide any flaws.

Quinn Harper Children’s Hair Salon Terms And Conditions

I’m running late. Will you still be able to fit me in?

In order to respect the time of both our clients and our staff, we ask you to arrive on time for
your appointment. We have a 30-minute appointment, which is needed for a quality haircut,
especially if your child has thick and long hair, if you want a new hairstyle, and in case your child
is a wriggler. We will do our best to accommodate you if you are late, but we ask that you call
the store to inform them that you’ll be late as soon as possible. If you arrive late and we cannot
complete your appointment, you will be rescheduled, so it is important for you to arrive on
time for scheduled appointments.

What is your cancellation policy for hair appointments?

We understand that emergencies happen. If you need to cancel your appointment, we simply
ask that you notify us of any cancellations or reschedule at least two hours before the
appointment. In case you miss your appointment, booking your next visit will require a pre-
payment of the full amount of the service you want to book.

Service guarantee & refunds

Your satisfaction is our highest priority. If you are not completely content, please let us know
during your child’s haircut or within 24 hours after your service has been carried out. We are
committed to making any needed corrections and, if there was a fault on our side, to offer you a
refund.

Right to refuse service

Your child safety is our priory. Our salon staff has the right to refuse service if your child is
constantly screaming, hitting, kicking, or running away during the haircut. If their behaviour
may influence the effects of the service and our hairdresser cannot complete your
appointment, you will be charged.
